Sean in Rome - August, 2005The obelisk in the background is in the middle of the plaza outside St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican. It was an ancient Roman war monument, brought home among the spoils of war from Egypt. St. Peter was martyred in the gardens of the Emperor Nero at the base of the Vatican Hill, crucified upside down not far from the spot of this obelisk.
