Peace and Politics

Source

“A society where faith is prevented from vigorous public expression is a society that has fashioned the state into an idol. And when the state becomes an idol, men and women become the sacrificial offering."
- Archbishop Charles Chaput, August 25, 2010

The degredation of religious freedom, the archbishop explained, is manifested as part of an “aggressively secular political vision and a consumerist economic model.” The objective is to replace religion and social and moral considerations with technological progress and social engineering. And with the government in charge, people need live only to gratify their appetites and desires. Which is why so many people these days are unhappy and miserable.

"Peace is a gift of God, not the work of politicians."
- Fr. Petrus Pavlicek, O.F.M. Cap

Good post, Sean. I would answer this statement of Archbishop Chaput:

The degredation of religious freedom, the archbishop explained, is manifested as part of an “aggressively secular political vision and a consumerist economic model.”

by saying that religious freedom (by which I mean the freedom for any and all religions to exist and offer "vigorous public expression") can only lead to practical atheism in public life. For, when all religions, with their opposing tenets, are allowed to exist with vigorous public expression as though they were equally true, then it is only a matter of time before none are seen as true and practical atheism, with it's materialism and secularism, takes over. Better by far for the true faith to be persecuted by the State than for it to be drowned in the sewer of "tolerance" and its place taken by atheism.
